Letter from the Editor – June 2025

I have just travelled through Xinjiang, which is the biggest province in China (1665 km2) with a population of 26 million, consisting mostly of Uighur and other ethnic minorities. However, unless we have visited and enjoyed the hospitality of people in the villages, we would only believe the negative stories so often reported in the media. They do have problems like unemployment, lack of public transport, etc., but what they lack in material goods, they make up for with the vibrance of their culture, beautiful scenery and local hospitality.

Lord Howe Island, like many regional areas, faces similar problems and uncertainties like employment opportunities, housing shortage, and infrastructure problems – and maybe even finding a suitable partner! When Chinese people lack choice, they develop an attitude of “less is more”: they focus on better quality of life, relationships, and appreciation of what they have; they focus on their need and not their wants, spending quality time with other people and discovering interesting things about them. Locally, this attitude can translate into looking after the Island and the future of our younger generation.

Finally, I’d like to share with you one of the sayings of the Chinese sage, Confucius, “We have two lives, the second of which begins when we realize we only have one.” It always helps to be happy and content within ourselves.

The Island is very quiet at the moment with most businesses closing in winter but there are still many options available. Be brave, come to enjoy the beautiful Island in winter and have a new adventure!
