Art Deco Under the Palms – Curvy Curb Transforms Transformer

A psychic SOS floated out from the residents of Sunrise Boulevard (one of the more desirable residential locations in Lord Howe’s Eastern Suburbs) when they noticed that their iconic street-corner transformer was starting to look like the leaning tower of Pisa due to tectonic subsidence of the roadside verge.

LHIB Electrical Manager, Greg Higgins, must have picked up the “vibe” (or should we say “current”) from anxious local residents, and marshalled an A-Team from the Island Board, who, it was expected, would not need to exert much creativity in propping up the sagging sub-station. However, surprise was on everyone’s face when Shane Deacon arrived and proceeded to dig a very-curvy trench around the road-side perimeter, followed by some equally curvy formwork. It seems that Tia Makiiti’s philosophy of “going with the flow… “ (of traffic, that is) had initiated extra input into the unique architectural design.

Sadly, Shane had to retire due to a dose of Covid, but not before passing the curvy baton to a superbly capable Wes Holden who, it was rumored, had submitted a creative CV to the Board regarding his experience building cow bails, art studios, garages, exotic pergolas etc.

As a final creative master-flourish, Wes went the extra mile when he was supplied with sixteen seashells by an unnamed Sunrise Boulevard resident. (The shells had been collected pre–Marine Park, of course.) These were shaped by Wes to look like a wavy Art Deco flower, highlighting the curve and tapering line of the new construction. The finishing touches were completed by Tia, who added a deeply meditative, Zen-Buddhist, dry garden look by carefully raking around the perimeter.

Despite the distinctly “cubist” substation, Sunrise Boulevard residents are now quietly confident that their Art Deco kerb will rival all other masterpieces like the church of St Joan of Arc in Nice, France.
