Lord Howe Island is not just blessed with its natural beauty and environment, we are also blessed with the foresight of the Lord Howe Island Act (1953), Amendment Act (1981), plus our Local Environment Plan.
The limit of 400 to the number of tourist beds in the LEP has also acted to protect our environment, and to shelter us from ‘over-tourism’, a widely recognised problem that has destroyed the beauty and amenity of many places in the world (much to the detriment of visitors and residents in those areas).
In the current economic climate, with the high cost of living affecting everyone, the limit of 400 tourist beds has reduced the impact of the downturn on our community compared with many other tourist destinations. Clearly, if we plan to look after our environment, and carefully regulate our tourist numbers – even at the expense of one-off windfalls – it will provide long term economic stability and wellbeing for our community.
