Island Gardens
Each Thursday, our budding group of junior gardeners meet for Gardening Club. The kids are learning how to compost, start a worm farm, care for our plants, raise seedlings and improve the soil quality.
Each term, we visit a local garden to learn from some experts and to get out and about in the community. Last week we visited Anna’s garden and had the chance to explore her kale, pumpkins, watermelons, okra, taro, and seedlings. Everyone learnt about different ways and times to plant, how different foods can be prepared and enjoyed devouring her fresh produce.
Thank you for welcoming us, Anna. We are looking for more local gardens to visit. Please reach out if you’re interested in hosting a bunch of inquisitive, enthusiastic and well-mannered barefoot gardeners.

Music to Our Ears
We have been lucky enough this year to have special music lessons each week with Lythay and Lagani, focused not only on the Music elements of the Creative Arts Syllabus, but also on the enjoyment and teamwork that music brings. Everyone is loving this new initiative at Lord Howe Island Central School.

Pollution Solutions with Jack the Super Prawn
On May 13, students in our 3-6 class joined students from across the country at the Jack the Super Prawn Pollution Solution conference. Several keynote speakers set the scene, before we launched into pollution issues for LHI and how we might solve these problems. This is a great student-led initiative, allowing our budding scientists and conservationists to be a part of positive real-world solutions that impact their home. Well done to all involved!

Chess Club
Along with our other lunch time activities of Yoga (Wednesdays) and Garden Club (Thursdays), Mr B has introduced Chess Club on Tuesdays. This has turned out to be incredibly popular, with accomplished players and beginners alike enjoying the time to play this classic game of strategy. Maybe we have a budding Kasparov, Carlsen or Dommaraju in our midst!

Choir
Speaking of budding talents and new lunch time activities, we have also added Choir to our list on Mondays. It warms my heart to see kids joining together in music, and our keen choir members are having a lovely time enjoying singing and performing. A big thanks to Lani, Lythay & Lagani for giving up their time to make this a reality for Lord Howe Island Central School. We look forward to the not-too-distant future when our school choir can perform for their community as well.
Tennis Champion
In early May, our very own talented tennis star Adelka travelled all the way to my old hometown of Bathurst to represent our school and region (North Coast) at the NSW PSSA State Tennis Championships. Adelka played with pride, heart, and skill, winning 6 out of 7 of her singles matches for the second year in a row, and her North Coast team finished a terrific 7th overall. Along with great tennis, Adelka also forged some lovely new friendships, and her team were commended for supporting each other right up until the last game! Congratulations Adelka, we are all very proud of you!

Ritchies IGA Rewards
Our school’s P&C Association has now signed up as a beneficiary to the Ritchies IGA rewards program. For everyone out there that shops with Ritchies IGA, you can now nominate the LHICS PCA as your beneficiary, which means that the P&C gets 0.5% of your purchases as a no-strings-attached donation from Ritchies. This will be of huge benefit as another stress-free stream of fundraising for our incredibly hard-working P&C, so please join in if you can!
Thank you, Macquarie Sports
We’re very grateful to Macquarie Bank and the Macquarie Sports Institution for their generous donation of soccer balls, footballs, and cricket sets. Our sports captains had a great time unpacking and checking out the new gear, which will be used and appreciated by students across the school. A big thanks to Moose for helping make this connection happen.

Erskine Valley Cup
It’s been great to see students, both past and present, and the wider community come together for a range of Erskine Valley Cup events over the last 6 months or so.
More details will be available soon, but this term sees 5-a-side soccer on Saturday, 28th June, from 3pm, and pizza cooking/art portrait prize on the afternoon of Monday, 30th June, at the Public Hall. We hope to see you there!

Jokes of the Month
Q: Why did the can crusher quit his job?
A: Because it was soda pressing.
I wrote a song about a tortilla. Actually, it’s more like a wrap.
